Certain grate installations require more than a standard channel or prepared opening. Radius grates, tree grates, bespoke sizes and other custom grates may require a purpose-made frame to provide the correct support, alignment and finished installation.
Lateral Design Studio can design and manufacture steel frames specifically to suit the grate, surrounding materials and individual site requirements.
Why is a Frame Required?
A correctly designed frame provides a strong, consistent bearing surface, helping the grate sit securely and evenly within the finished installation. This is particularly important for bespoke products where the shape, dimensions or support requirements cannot be accommodated by a standard drainage channel or off-the-shelf frame.
Frames also create a defined edge between the grate and surrounding paving, concrete or other finishes. This can help protect adjacent materials from edge damage and reduce direct contact between cast iron and surrounding surfaces, helping to minimise the possibility of rust staining.
Designed Around the Installation
Rather than treating the frame as a separate component, it can be designed alongside the grate so that the complete assembly works with the intended site construction.
Frames can be manufactured for:
- Radius and curved drainage grates
- Tree grates and tree pit surrounds
- Bespoke and non-standard grate sizes
- New concrete installations
- Paving and landscape build-ups
- Existing openings and retrofit applications
Different arrangements can be produced to suit the installation, including frames for embedment within new construction, stand-off arrangements for particular paving build-ups and solutions designed around existing slabs or openings.
Can the Grate Simply Sit on Concrete?
A formed concrete rebate or ledge can sometimes provide a bearing surface, but it may not always offer the best long-term solution. Exposed concrete edges can chip or deteriorate, particularly where grates are regularly removed, subjected to traffic or installed in demanding external environments.
A purpose-made metal frame provides a more controlled and durable bearing edge, helping to maintain the required opening dimensions and provide consistent support.
Why Steel?
Although the grate itself may be manufactured from cast iron, fabricated steel is generally better suited to producing supporting frames.
Steel fabrication allows greater control over dimensions, geometry and fit, making it particularly suitable for large tree grates, bespoke openings and curved installations where accuracy is important.
Do Radius Grates Require a Custom Frame?
In most cases, yes. Standard proprietary drainage channels and frames are generally designed for straight installations, so a radius or curved grate will normally require a frame manufactured to follow the same geometry.
Lateral Design Studio can manufacture the supporting frame to correspond with the required radius, grate dimensions and installation arrangement.
What About Tree Grates?
Tree grate installations vary depending on the size and shape of the tree pit, surrounding paving, required loading and underlying construction.
Where required, we can manufacture a supporting frame specifically for the tree grate and intended opening, providing defined support around the perimeter and a clean transition between the grate and surrounding landscape finish.
When Should the Frame Be Considered?
As early as possible.
The appropriate frame arrangement can depend on finished surface levels, paving thickness, concrete construction, loading and installation method. Considering these details during the design or specification stage helps ensure the grate, frame and surrounding construction work together correctly.
NEED HELP WITH A FRAME?
If you are specifying radius grates, tree grates or another bespoke grate installation, Lateral Design Studio can help determine whether a frame is required and advise on the most appropriate solution.
Send us your drawings, dimensions and details of the surrounding construction and we can discuss the most suitable grate and frame arrangement for your project.
We offer numerous finishes for many of our products. If you are interested in any of these finishes then please get in touch 020 8450 2244.
Please note: Finishes are only applied to the top surfaces and the open apertures from the top down of our covers. This protects the visual surfaces, for aesthetic reasons and helps prevents run off.
POST-RUST TREATMENT
Our cast iron products arrive in their raw state, initially displaying a grey color. However, upon exposure to water, they gradually transform into a vibrant orange hue. Over time, this rust layer naturally diminishes, revealing a richer, chocolate brown patina.
For those who prefer a more controlled aesthetic, we offer a pre-rusting service. With this option, we supply the covers already rusted and then apply a special protective treatment post-rust. This treatment not only preserves the color but also deepens it, resulting in a darker and more visually appealing finish.
This treatment offers excellent chemical, salt, abrasion, and impact resistance.
CORTEN SEALANT
In a manner akin to our Post-Rust method, we can also implement a similar approach with our corten steel products. Corten steel, renowned for its inherent rusting qualities, can be enhanced with the application of a sealant. This sealant not only seals the rusted surface but also attains an aged chocolate brown finish. This applied topcoat sealer finish serves a dual purpose: it not only achieves a more stable patina but also halts the aging process, preventing any potential bleaching.
POWDER COATING
Powder coating is a versatile metal finishing process that allows us to achieve nearly any RAL color or shade you desire. This finish is known for its exceptional durability, making it highly resistant to scratches, chipping, wear, and fading. To check the RAL colour shade you may require, please open the colour chart: RAL Colour Chart
BAKED-ON OIL
The baked-on oil finish is a unique application that utilises recycled cooking oil as the coating material. It imparts an aged appearance to the product, creating a charmingly weathered look. As the oil naturally wears off, it facilitates a smooth and graceful transition from the initial installation to the eventual patina.
